What is a Dental Mouthguard?

Athletes who participate in full-contact sports must own a well-fitted and ideally custom dental mouthguard. A mouthguard will protect you or your child’s teeth from breaking or chipping during games, preventing painful injuries and costly restorative treatments.

We recommend a customized mouthguard that’s designed based on a mold of your teeth. Custom mouthguards are more comfortable, so you’ll be more likely to wear yours, and they also do a better job of protecting your teeth.

Who Might Need a Mouthguard?

Mouthguards are often mandatory for athletes in high contact sports like football, boxing, and hockey. However, the American Dental Association also recommends them for other sports where dental injuries are a risk, like basketball.

Mouthguards are not to be confused with dental nightguards, which we recommend wearing at night if you grind your teeth.

Types of Mouthguards

There are a few types of mouthguards available to athletes.

Custom-made mouthguards are made by a dentist, based on an imprint of your teeth. They’re designed to fit your teeth perfectly and offer the best level of comfort and protection.

Boil and bite mouthguards are often purchased at sporting goods stores. As the name suggests, they allow you to create an imprint of your teeth after boiling. They’re superior to over-the-counter mouthguards, but they’re still not as effective as prescribed, custom-made guards.

Stock mouthguards are generally made of rubber and one-size-fits-all. They’re quite affordable, but they’re not as comfortable or as effective as custom dental mouthguards.

What are the Benefits of Wearing a Mouthguard?

Mouthguards go above and beyond in protecting you or your child’s health. They prevent all of the following outcomes:

Broken or chipped teeth
Tooth loss
Injuries to the gums, lips, or soft mouth tissue
Jaw fractures
