Dental Crowns

What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a dental restoration treatment where a cap is bonded to a tooth. The crown is usually shaped and colored to match the tooth, as a way of reinforcing it and protecting it from further damage.

It’s a little like putting a cast on a broken leg. The only difference is that, since the teeth can’t repair themselves the way a broken bone can, the crown usually stays in place.

If you think you may need dental crowns in Glendale, we’d be happy to help

Why Do You Need Dental Crown?

A tooth crown has a few potential purposes, but for the most part, it helps to support a tooth that has had significant damage. These are the situation when we’d normally recommend a dental cap.

  • Severe cavities or decay

  • Following root canal treatment

  • Severe damage to the tooth structure, like breakage or cracks

  • Following a major dental filling where there isn’t enough health enamel left intact

What Are Dental Crowns Made Of?

Dental caps can be made of a few different materials. These are the ones we normally use for dental crowns in Glendale:

  • Porcelain

  • Metal

  • Zirconia

  • Composite resin, especially for temporary crowns

Steps of Placing a Dental Crown

Getting a crown will usually require two appointments. Here’s how we break down the process.

First Appointment

First, we will book you in for a consultation to make sure that a crown is right for you.

  • During the first appointment, your dentist or hygienist will clean and examine your teeth.

  • If needed, we will numb the area and remove old restorations and decayed material.

  • Once your teeth are prepared, we will take a digital impression of your teeth, in order to prepare a custom crown that will fit you perfectly.

  • Finally, we will apply a temporary crown to protect your teeth while the final crown is being prepared.

Second Appointment

Once your custom crown is ready, we will book you in for placement.

  • We will remove the temporary crown, and check the fit of your new crown.

  • If all is well, we will numb the area.

  • Finally, we will apply a bonding material, and fit your final cap in place.
